Special Education Teacher Consultant for Visually Impaired (2 Positions)

Description:Provide instructional and consultative services to constituent districts in Oakland County to assure all students with disabilities receive appropriate educational and support services.

Ten month work year. Salary based on the Special Education Teacher Salary Schedule.
Duties:Provide direct instruction to students with disabilities.
Provide assistance and consultation to local school staff in the resolution of individual student academic, social, and/or behavioral/disciplinary issues, identification and effective utilization of available instructional materials and equipment, implementation of Federal, state and local initiatives and mandates, and usage of school-based technology.
Work collaboratively with evaluation team members and/or local school staff to evaluate students with suspected disabilities and develop effective academic and behavioral strategies.
Prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for improved student performance.
Communicate assessment findings and recommendations to parents, and school staff; assist the school staff in developing appropriate interventions for improved student performance.
Monitor performance and progress of assigned students; update the student�s academic and behavioral plans as needed.
Develop materials for use in the classroom.
Attend MET and IEP meetings and provide assistance in developing IEP goals and objectives.
Coordinate the acquisition of appropriate assistive materials and equipment for assigned students.
Maintain knowledge of current state and Federal mandates related to instruction of students with disabilities.
Provide in-service training.
Serve as a resource to parents, families, school personnel, community service providers, professional organizations and others.
Assist in training paraprofessionals and volunteers who work with students with disabilities.
Attend various internal and external meetings relating to special education programs and services.
Serve as a liaison to various local, state and national educational and governmental organizations which focus upon instruction of students with disabilities.
Work collaboratively with various community stakeholders, child serving agencies, regional and state organizations, and others to coordinate development and delivery of services provided to students with disabilities.
Qualifications:Master�s Degree in Special Education.
Valid Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Educational Professional (ACVREP) preferred.
Three or more years of successful classroom experience including at least two years working with special needs students.
Valid Michigan driver�s license and ability to travel to local schools throughout Oakland County.
Knowledge of general education curriculum and accommodations.
Ability to properly utilize required assessment instruments and summarize and report findings.
Ability to design and deliver specialized instruction and support use of assistive technology specific to visual accommodations.
Operate required office equipment such as a personal computer, fax machine, copier and the like.
